Alone again, and some drawings (and ZIPPOS) [Sep. 21st, 2006|08:38 pm]
Jasmine Becket-Griffith
Kachina, Eleanor & Theodore are on their way back to Kansas City =( I miss them so much already.

We had so much fun during their visit. I was happy that I was able to spend so much time with them. They are all so much fun to be around! We went to the parks, ate lots of good food, watched a lot of Thomas the Tank Engine, etc. I miss them so much!

Earlier this afternoon I started feeling kind of ill - stomachwise - I hope I'm not coming down with anything. Theodore was sick for a day, I hope I didn't catch anything. If I did, I hope I feel a lot better soon - I'm going to be leaving this weekend for Larry Elmore's artist retreat in Kentucky! I need to go buy my paints for the retreat - he's going to try to convince me the virtues of oil paints - we'll see how it goes ;P I'm pretty loyal to acrylics, personally. I used oils for a few years back when I was a teenager, but once I switched acrylics I kinda stuck with them. Well, we'll see =P

Now onto the ART! Original drawings, with a special bonus! Here's the deal - I recently licensed some of my paintings for designs on Zippo lighters (awesome metal lighters, highly collectable, refillable, last forever). They wanted some "lineart" (ie, simpler drawings) based on some of my popular paintings, so I did some pen & pencil sketches for them to use in production. So I have a few original drawings available (very rare for me!). These auctions are for "Licorice Fairy" and "Devilish Fairy". There will be more to come. The winner of each auction gets the original drawing AND the corresponding ZIPPO lighter, fresh from the factory.

Here are links to the very special auctions!:

Also - Hot Topic has been putting more of my licensed merchandise up on their website - you can see that stuff here:

Bleah, I'm going to go lay down for awhile. I have a new painting I want to work on - I might try to get some work done later tonight, I'll see how I feel....

Those lighters are adorable. I so envy you getting to go to an artists' retreat, how fun!! I sure hope you're not getting sick, though. I've done oils before and they are wonderful, I can't get the hang of acrylics. Anyways take care and have fun!

Should be lots of fun! I did oils for most of my teenage years, and then switched to acrylics. Ought to be interesting....

Thankfully I am feeling much better now! =)

Thank you very much! >^__^<

I'd had my website for several years, and then slowly but surely I started getting email inquiries from various companies such as "Hi, I represent XXX company, we make XXX products and sell them to stores like XXX. Would you be interested in licensing your images for our products?" and then we'd sign a contract, and next thing I know I start seeing my artwork on stuff in stores, lol. Basically companies that license my artwork just find me through my website, it seems.

Hi Jessica! I wrote back - just let us know what address - shouldn't be a problem. I'm leaving tomorrow morning for Kentucky, but Matt will still be here to take care of orders and emails =)

Hope you feel better soon Jasmine! I tend to -always- get sick when I'm around the nieces and nephews (four of them from ages 1 to 7) but it nearly always passes in day, usually I feel like complete rubbish shortly after seeing them (because at least one is nearly always sick) but within 24 hours I'm fine, so I hope the same will happen for you :)!

The Zippo's are very cute, especially the Devilish Fairy.

cool! I just got a zippo lighter with my friend Krysztof's artwork on it! They are REALLY nice quality!
I hope you feel better & aren't coming down with anything that spoils your retreat!
I have heard that oils take a LONG time to dry...but I have never tried them so I don't know for sure.

They are great lighters. I don's smoke, but I sure burn a lot of incense and candles, so I kept one of each for myself, lol.

Your work was amazing after coming back from that artist retreat last year, I can't wait to see what you do this year!

What do you do at a retreat?

Thank you Amanda!!

Well, mostly we make art! We have rented an entire Inn in the middle of the woods, and there are 10 of us total (each have our own room). Lots of sketchbook drawing, painting tutorials, sharing stories and ideas, reference photo taking, etc. Last year (well, I guess it was March, but it feels like last year!) Larry brought along his model that he uses for his paintings (she's the "EverQuest" girl, hehe) and we got to sketch her, take reference photos, etc. This specific retreat is focused on oil painting - so that should be interesting.

ah oils.
Have been doing that too for a while a couple of years ago, but personally it's not really my thing. Also because they don't dry as fast as acrylics. once you are used to acrylics you don't want antyhing else I guess, haha. Man, I ruined my oil paintings over and over again because I just didn't have the patience, or forgot that the paint was still wet, lmao ^___^
But oils can be so incredibly beautiful and smooth though. Like Mark Ryden's work. Just lovely.
Hmm it makes me want to try oils again too for some reason hahaha.

Btw, don't get sick O.O !!

Get well soon and good luck with the auctions ^^

I painted in oils for about four years when I was a teenager, and then switched to acrylics and never went back, lol. I'll have to give them another shot though - some artists do great things with oils.

When i was just beginning to paint, i didnt really know anything about it and i used oils as well as acrylics on the same painting and it just made this horrible sticky mess everywhere, i feel so stupid looking back on it now,
Larrys paintings are just amazing though,

i hope your not sick, ive just got over a throat infection, being sick is so annoying!

Believe it or not there are some artists who combine the two - I forget the golden rule - I think you can use oils on top of acrylics, but you can't use acrylics on top of oils? Something like that =P

I'm looking forward to trying them again though, we'll see.

I'm feeling much better now, thank goodness!

Hi Jasmine,

I was recently looking through Google Images for some fun pictures that I could convert into Fall/Halloween images for my LJ and one of your paintings popped up. It led me to your gallery and I found that you had an LJ as well!

Do you have a problem if people use your images as LJ icons? I certainly wouldn't do it without your permission.

Thanks!

Michelle

I hope you are not sick!! EEek!

I use to paint with oils in schools. Mostly abstract or still life but I didn't like it. Its messy and it smells, specially when you have to thin it and prepare the canvas etc.
Maybe the effect is nicer though, so you should try it.
Just remember the drying time take forever! I think we talked about it once and didn't it say it took 7 years in same cases if my memory serves me correctly. LOL
Crazy.

Yep - untreated oils take like 6 months to dry thoroughly, and some say they take years to "cure" completely! However Larry says you can put some chemicals in with the oils to make them dry quickly - I'll have to experiment with that.
