Good morning!!!!!!!!!! [Nov. 15th, 2004|10:24 am]
Jasmine Becket-Griffith
I'm sorry I've been a little absent here at LJ over the past couple of days! We have a couple of very large orders we're working on and it's a bit crazy around here!

Yesterday we went to the 29th Annual "Festival of the Masters" at Disney World! It is a HUGE art fair - the largest I've been to. Bigger than the Winter Park art fair or the Kansas City Plaza art fair even! It basically covers all of Downtown Disney - tons of booths selling art - lots of local artists, etc. They had a great segment of chalk/sidewalk artists too - everybody with about a 6'x6' square to create anything they wanted on. It looked like a lot of fun. We had a great time browsing through all of the great art there, drinking good drinks and eating good snacks =) Next year I am DEFINITELY going to have a booth there!!!!!!!! That is, if they jury accepts me, hehe (as most of you know, there is kind of a bias against fantasy art vs. "fine art" in some circles.....). There were a lot of people actually buying stuff, and it had a very good atmosphere to it. Of course being at Disney World during a relatively busy season, there was a very high attendance (lots of tourists who of course are already in "spending/souvenir buying" mode, hehe).

It's another beautiful day of course (did I mention how much I love Florida in the fall/winter?) - we have our windows open as usual and it's just so darned... nice! I'm getting ready to start on a new painting - I'm not at all sure what it will be of - I'm just going to pick some nice colours and start slapping down the paints! And of course, you can watch me HERE!

people can be biased...and what exactly qualifies as fine art? oh wells-if they decide to be retarded. Glad to hear that you took a bit of time out of the hectic painting scene to get out a bit.

also-i nearly fell off my chair laughing when i saw your last painting and a picture of you standing next to it...that thing is nearly as big as you are...totally cracked me up-but it is of course very beautious :-)

wow-those were the two colors that came to mind when i looked at your bright white canvas. It wasn't so much that those had to be together-more just that i was in the mood to see pink or ice blue today. I think because it is so gray out here right now.

It does look very lovely thus far though as I took a peek because I just got home from school.

Hehe, I think I'd probably get in - (I think they might give preference to local artists) - but you never know. Some art fairs and galleries specifically say "no "fantasy/scifi art" - can you believe that?

No fantasy or sci fi art???? But they except CRAP abstract?!?!?!?! WTF is that? LOL Makes you wonder how they define what is and what isnt fantasy art. Like I bet art with angels isnt considered fantasy art (even though nobody has ever actually seen an angel) I mean come on!

Of course you'd get in! And probably do better than any of the stuffy landscape artists or whatever else there is, lol.

XOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXO!

but abstract can be cool. i was quite perplexed as well that an art fair would discriminate against some particular genre of art.

It's not necessarily art fairs in particular, but the art world (galleries, academia, etc.) in general. A lot of people consider fantasy/scifi art to be "illustration."

huh-I guess you learn something new every day. Interesting. It just goes to prove that everyone has their own opinions and everyone's is different. That is why our world is such a weirdo place but cool.

Wow...you're so lucky to live there! I'm stuck in the UK and there's nothing really interesting near me...

I'm currently being asked about career choices etc at school (being bugged by all the teachers...) and the only thing I can come up with at the moment is freelance artist, as it's the only thing that really interests me. I was wondering if I could possibly e-mail you a few questions to answer for me about working as an artist and your techniques?

The fare sounds good, that would be cool getting your booth next year! You'd get a lot of business from that, yay!

You would think Walt Disney World, being the land of fantasy and imagination, would welcome fantasy art with open arms. Of course if they aren't in charge and some snobby art "critics" are, then it would just be typical.

I'd love to go to that next year, though. I really must get a calendar somewhere of all the art fairs and things throughout Florida.

To be eligible for FotM you have to have won a primary award at another art show and show verification.
