Good morning!!! [Sep. 3rd, 2004|10:18 am]
Jasmine Becket-Griffith
It's a beautiful day outside - you'd never know that there is a hurricane coming!!

One thing that drives me nuts about hurricanes (small complaint) - the OVER-USE of the phrase "HUNKER DOWN" by the newscasters, public officials, meteorologists, etc. LOL! Every other sentence they say "just hunker down" or "you'd better hunker down" or "everybody needs to hunker down". And then the switch to the weatherman who gives great advice like "hunker down with your friends" or "those in mobile homes should go hunker down with family in stable houses". And then they go to Jeb Bush who tells us "it's time to hunker down". Seriously - I heard it something like 30 times in one broadcast, lol.

It also cracks me up to hear Governor Jeb Bush keep talking about how he "is in negotiations with the President of the United States to send in reinforcements" or "I have been discussing with the President of the United States about whether we should declare Florida a National Disaster Area", etc. I mean, that's his brother for chrissakes, hehe. They make it sound so formal.

Enough about that!!!!

Oh! tigerpixieart - the "Pixie Cats" painting I did of your furbabies is the #1 picture up at Artwanted - check it out - ArtWanted.comTop ten! Your kitties are famous, hehe!!!!

Let me see...... I'm working on some orders and email & stuff like that =P We got a huge shipment out to the post office this morning, since we won't be able to ship for a few days - they are closing later today, and will be closed tomorrow of course for the Hurricane, and then Sunday they are always closed, and Monday is Labor Day, and then depending on damage hopefully they will open up on Tuesday. They are telling us now that the hurricane is moving very slowly (not really losing strength, but actually physically travelling slowly), and it will probably get to the Celebration/Disney area at about 10:00am on Sunday. They are asking us to stay off of the streets starting at 11:00am tomorrow though, and to stay indoors until the hurricane leaves =P

Later on I will be painting!!! You'll be able to watch me HERE - I'll probably be working off and on.

Hehe...hunker down sounds as if it had something to do with pigs. But I'm not entirely sure what.

Hah, maybe he doesn't want to sound like, "Well I'm talking with my brother, and so we're semi negotiating</i>, and umm..." etc.

Hunker down Jasmin!!! Hunker down, its coming!!! :-)
Ok sorry. I hope tomorrow will be good weather too and that you will hardly notice that horrible hurricane :-( It's so unfair that Florida gets hit twice so soon after each other!

Congrats on making Top 10!
I made the second spot yesterday, I was so happy!! LOL Carrie Hawks was number 8. Can't believe it.

LOL about the "hunker down". I looked it up once when we were being threatened by a hurricane and found others had the same question. What the heck is "hunker down". I always thought it was a military phrase. The Oxford English Dictionary describes hunker as this:

“squat, with the haunches, knees, and ankles acutely bent, so as to bring the hams near the heels, and throw the whole weight upon the fore part of the feet”. The advantage of this position is that you’re not only crouched close to the ground, so presenting a small target for whatever the universe chooses to throw at you, but you’re also ready to move at a moment’s notice.

You can read about the evolvement to "hunker down" here http://www.worldwidewords.org/qa/qa-hun1.htm LOL I have way too much time on my hands!!!!

hunker? What an odd word! Judging from Colleen's definition, it seems like it's what we did in elementary school when we would have a tornado drill. Only, don't forget to cover the back of your neck with your hands!

hunker hunker hunker

That's great that 2 of your pics are in the top ten at artwanted!! Hehe Tigerpixie will be pleased!
'Hunker down' what a weird thing to say!! It's so random lol!
Something v mysterious is going on in my room.....before I went out I washed my brushes so they were all clean and left them on the side. Then, when I got back about 15 minutes ago, there was a paintbrush lying on my floor with 'rose' paint on it and thr paint was splattered EVERYWHERE and it had dried, argh!! So I have just been cleaning it all up which is a bit difficult when acrylic has dried on a lamanet floor!

Here in TN the weatherman's favorite and over used phrase is "Take Cover" during a tornado, they say it thousands of times. The pre-lude phrase to "take cover" is naming a town where the tornado activity is and saying "your under the gun...take cover now"
So I advise you to "hunker down" and then "take cover" hehehee

Thank you!!!

I'm a fantasy artist, making my living selling my acrylic paintings, etc. I sometimes use myself as a model (hey, I'm always here and I work for free, lol!). When I do I scan in the painting and take a photo of myself in the same pose and put them together using a little animation program to make it look like I'm turning into the painting (or vice versa!). I have too much fun with it, lol - I've got a bunch of them here: http://www.livejournal.com/allpics.bml?user=jasminetoad
