Hurricane, New Custom Painting Auction & New Merchandise!!! [Sep. 2nd, 2004|08:52 pm]
Jasmine Becket-Griffith
Meep - I've been watching the news, and Hurricane Frances is definitely on her (apparently it's the girl spelling of Frances, hehe) way!! The hurricane itself is approximately the size of Texas, and it's coming right towards us, so it's going to be pretty tough to avoid. Some of the coastal areas have been evacuated, and they're all coming to Central Florida (my neck of the woods) to escape the actual "storm surge" (where the ocean comes out over the land). But of course, being Labor Day Weekend, all of the hotels & motels are booked up completely. What a mess - the highways all through Florida are gridlocked from literally millions (about 2 or 3 million) people trying to escape =(

For my immediate area though, the safest thing we can do is just stay put. We're in an incredibly well-built new home with solid block construction and a couple of "safe rooms" (windowless central rooms). Our utility lines are all underground, and stayed on all through Hurricane Charley, so hopefully we won't lose any power, cable, phone, water, etc., at least I HOPE we don't. I'll try to keep you all updated here - if I seem to disappear or don't answer emails for a few days - you'll know why!!!!

Okay, first off, I have an original painting for sale! This is one of my "Custom" auctions!! Basically it is an unfinished painting - just the basics are there - a wide eyed girl in front of a starry night sky. The winner of this auction will get to tell me what colour/style to make her hair, what colour eyes she should have, what kind of clothes, and what kind of wings!!!!! She is an acrylic painting on a sheet of canvas and measures 9"x12". This is your chance to have an original painting customized to your specifications! It is up for a 10 day auction, starting at just one penny!!! She will be ending on Sunday September 12th at 7:09 PM and you can see her here:

And - more exciting news - I have some great new merchandise for sale!!!

I am offering my new postcards in sets of five (one of each picture - "Horned Fairy," "Hunger Pains," "Lost ..but Not Worried," "Red Vinyl Fairy," and "Two Headed Girl". Each set is only $10.00! These are professionally retailed postcards, on glossy cardstock, ready to send to your friends or to keep for your own as pieces of artwork! The postcard sets can be found here:

In addition, I now have decorative metal lightswitch plate covers for sale! They are great for brightening up any room, and are only $6.00 each. There are three designs and you can see them here:

Alice and the Cheshire Cat:

Pensive Fairy:

and Two-Headed Girl:

*********
I was hoping to start exploring Final Fantasy XI with Matty tonight, but we are still getting some big orders ready to ship out early tomorrow - we're getting everything we can out before the hurricane comes. ((heatherica - I'll let you know when we get set up!!!)).

Off to more work!!!

Ugh! Sandstorm!!!!!

I've still never been to Vegas! My dad & stepmom seem to go out there once a month, lol - I feel like I'm missing out. I like staying up late, drinking, going to restaurants, gambling, etc. - it sounds like I'd enjoy it....

I say artist guest appearance at a trade show and then it is a write off! I know the place all too well, getting too old to stay out late. I have so many great friends, we stay out far too late.

"artist guest appearance at a trade show " - that sounds like a plan, lol!!!

They have some good fantasy/scifi conventions out there too sometimes, I could probably work that into a "business trip", hehe......

Heh. I just posted a get-out-while-you-still-can message. Leaving is something everyone tells you, but is something no one wants to do. I'm rather pleased that I'm moving. My apartment is the closest on our island to the ocean. Last year a hurricane barely missed us, but the other bands of the storm caused the waves to go over the entire island!!! That was really all the warning I needed. I'm not taking anymore chances. O_o

The custom painting is such a neat idea! I **love** the fairy on the bottom left corner of the examples. Orange and blue/torquise is my favorite colour combo!

The lightswitch plates are pretty cool! I had already seen them in some online shops, mostly the Chesire Cat though. I wondered when you'd be selling them! Very cool!!

Staying at home is your best choice so yeah good thing you're staying there.. People trying to evacuate now will find themselves on the road in their cars during the intense storm.... in a car... surrounded with GLASS..

your stuff is so cute! my husband and i are on the coast, and they expect the storm to hit us hard this time (although, the last time they said that, it missed us completely)- but if they're right, there might be one less artist competitor out there! haha- not that i'm much competition for you anyway, mostly what i do is dollmaking :)

hope you stay safe through this one!

Someone on my friend's list posted the Frances is much worse than Charley and two people on my friends list from Orlando are evacuating, so I'm really worried about you guys!! Please stay safe and make sure to let me know you are alive!!

So far so good! Frances looks like she won't be quite as strong as Charley, but will be much larger and will therefore hang around longer. They keep saying on the news NOT to evacuate in our area, hehe. Orlando is actually playing host to a lot of the people from the areas that are under evacuation. I'll keep you updated for sure!!

I hope the hurricane isn't too bad! That's pretty good that all your electrical stuff etc is all underground, that's what it's like where I live even though we don't get hurricanes or anything like that!
That's a great idea doing a 'custom' painting so the buyer can decide a few things for themselves, I don't think I new about your website when you did the other custom paintings as I had never heard of the idea before!
Wow! I want a lightswitch plate! I might just have to buy one.....
Keep safe!

Thank you!!!

Oh yes - every once in a while I put an "unfinished" piece up on eBay!

I do a lot of custom commissions too (like portraits and stuff) - my pricelist/policies are here: http://www.strangeling.com/commissions.html

Since not everybody can afford that though, I like to stick an occasional little "customized" fairy up at eBay starting at a penny to give everybody a chance =)

I bought two lightswitch plates of you know who!!!!;o)

I've been meaning to ask, the original painting I purchased from you a while ago "Lily Pad Mermaid" I haven't seen prints of it, just curious why not? Do you not make prints of all your paintings?

Hehe!!! I thought you might!!! I'm going through the orders right now (if I can stay away from LiveJournal that is, LOL!).

Oh! I remember her - she was a cutie!!!! Ah yes, unfortunately I paint so many paintings and have built up so many past paintings over the years I can't keep all of them actively showcased on my website (it would be a bit crazy to keep up with!). I keep the most popular ones from previous years, and then mostly I put my newer stuff there.

However - I never "retire" my open edition prints - I do keep high-res files of each and every painting so I can always sell prints if people ask me for a specific one! I've sold a few of the "Lilypad Mermaid" on a request-by-request basis. Just about any of my paintings (past or present) are available as prints upon request =)
