Good morning!!! [Jul. 14th, 2004|10:20 am]
Jasmine Becket-Griffith
Another beautiful day outside.....

but I'm inside, working =P

I'm putting together a huge wholesale print order (we had to buy extra ink cartridges for this one!) and trying to get that ready to go today. It's going to a fairy store in Boston called "Hope" (anybody in Boston know it?). I've only recently started selling prints wholesale (in orders of 50+ prints) , and it's kind of fun - I put them in little display packs and it looks so professional, lol. Doing this makes me excited to start going to fairs and festivals - I missed out on the big Fairy Festivals (in PA and OR) this summer, but I'm going to try to hit them next year. I am planning on having a booth at Celebration's Arts & Crafts Festival the first weekend in October this year though! I'll post more info as that progresses - it would be cool to see some of my Orlando-area fans & online friends there =)

Now I'm going to go paint though - I'm working on four simutaneous commissions (off-camera) and an original (the green one, on camera). You can watch me HERE!

Very cool about the wholesaleing! Do you approch them or did they approch you?

I think doing fairs and festivals would be fun, though probably pretty time consuming. I had thought about doing some localy here but I want to wait until I have a better selection of prints, artwork, ect. Maybe next year! :)

I just get emails asking me a lot - 90% are bogus (LOTS of scammers out there!!) though, lol, so it takes a while to sort through it for genuine inquiries. I don't even start preparing an order until the check has cleared!

Do you ask for a copy of their resale tax certificate? These are usually issued by the state they're doing business in, and serves to authenticate the business (no matter how small one is). (By the way, you might consider applying for one yourself, so that you can also qualify to purchase your art materials at wholesale prices. Would be more cost-effective if you plan on generating lots of prints, for instance, no?). A few years ago, when I was running my mail-order, loose-teas business I always had to fax in a copy of my resale certificate with my first big order, as well as fulfill the minimum purchase amount, etc. I never minded since it's a pretty usual practice. You might look into it, if you haven't already.

Well, good luck, and may you continue to receive lots of prospective business!

Cheers,

Angelique

Hi Angelique!

Thank you so much for the suggestion! I might do that from now on. With this particular store though, they already carry my stickers and some other merchandise (bought from the wholesale company that licenses them), so they've been cleared there. That's a good idea though - I might start asking that of new companies that approach me, that would make it easier for me to sort through the riff-raff, lol.

ps: Hmm, would love to see some "bookish, tea-drinking fairies" by you... lame idea? Well, here's to wishful thinking! (or, one day I could save up all my coins to commission one. That would work, too :)

*happily sips*

Hehe, being a rather bookish tea-drinker myself, you just might see some! I'm actually planning to do a series of faeries associated with different varieties of tea (I'm a tea nerd!!!). ;)

Hey look at me - I'm no longer anonymous! :) I think that would be awesome, Jasmine - your tea fairy series. I really look forward to seeing those. I just read that one of your cats is named after (maybe? sort of?) my favorite oolong tea "Ti Kuan Yin." I love it especially for its refreshing peachy/orchid fragrance. The "Iron Goddess of Mercy" would make for a lovely tea fairy, I'm sure. Mmm, maybe I'll go prepare some!

Welcome to LiveJournal!!!!!!

Oh neat! I've never had Kuan Yin tea! I'd love to try some! That sounds delicious. My little Quan-Yin is named after the goddess/bodhisattva (probably the tea is too!).

cool news about the wholesaling

It sounds great. Someday you'll visit the store in Boston and it will probably feel really surreal.

I was at the PA Fairy Festival this year, but I didn't really manage to sell. It might go better for you, and I think prints would have been the best thing--a low cost impulse buy product. But I hate to say the Fair organizers were very *disorganized* and it caused me some headaches.

Fairs are this whole other world--it's very strange. I used to go to them with my mom when she sold her weaving and baskets. Some people do really well at fairs and other people with great products and good prices might not sell at all. Location within the fair, the weather, who you're next to, it all makes a big difference.

But I expect that since you already have a following you might do well. At the very least perhaps people would like to meet you and then think they should buy another print.

Re: cool news about the wholesaling

Yeah, I'm just kind of looking at it as a chance for fun, meeting fans, and getting more exposure. I probably would make more money staying at home and doing commissions or something, but it would be fun to do some things in the "real" world from time to time!

Yeah, I'm kind of surprised you're not in on the fairy fest they're having here! I think that Brian and Wendy Froud are going to be there, even. I believe it's in St. Helen's, which is a wee little town just outside of Portland, about a half hour drive from where I live. I'm not sure if it's going to be a yearly thing or not - it would be nice if it was! I'm planning on going.

I was actually asked to go there - but with the whole buying-a-house thing and my other vacations, it didn't really give me enough time to plan (that and we need to buy a decent vehicle, lol). I'll definitely go next year though if they have it! I think it's a travelling festival - I believe it was in Sedona last year. I think it looks like a blast!

Hehe, I'm not too sure on Florida geography yet (we've only lived here a year now), but I plugged Titusville into MapQuest and it looks like it's about 60 miles away - right on the beach!!!!!

The one in Oregon is the Faerieworlds festival: http://www.faerieworlds.com It travels though - last year it was in Sedona, AZ!

The one in PA is called the Fairie Festival: http://www.fairiefestival.net/ it stays there each year. I haven't been to them yet but I plan to next year!!!
