New painting! [Jun. 13th, 2004|09:38 pm]
Jasmine Becket-Griffith
We just came back from the Garden Cafe (the vegetarian Chinese restaurant in Orlando) - we took Kachina & James there in thanks for helping us move =)

Oh my - it's so crazy around here, hehe - the computers are on the floor, and there are boxes everywhere - aaaahhh!!!

At any rate, I have a new little painting!!!

You can see her here:

"Faery Wood #4"

I've got tons of photos of the house to post probably tomorrow or the next day (we're going to the Magic Kingdom tomorrow with James, Kachina and Theodore!). I've got to go now - there are a million things going on!!! I'll catch up later!!!

I LOVE paintings on wood, they always have such a wonderful "antique" touch to them.

Hey Jasmine.. can I make a suggestion?
I have been painting on wood for a while, and also study restoration at conservation school...

Did you prime your woodsurface? because if you didn't, in a couple of years time your acrylic surface will most likely flake up completely... Especially since you used a crossection of a tree not commercial panels! Wood takes up alot of water on its grain face and will expand and contract, and this will cause the paint to get stressed and flake... Even if you varnish it, it will still happen, but might help a bit...

I reccommend Windsor&Newton panel gesso for acrylics if you require a primer.. but you might have primed the surface anyways so this might all be just redundant warning on my part.

:) Hope it was helpful.. I been using wood for a while and its so great to paint in the method of the 13th century artists in Florence.. but also more tricky than regular canvas.

Thank you for the suggestion! I prime with Golden brand acrylic gesso primer - just to be safe!

I've not used Windsor & Newton before - I always thought that they just made oil paints for some reason, lol!

Re: Beautiful

She looks great. I love to paint on wood, so I think you'll probably love it too.

You have a vegetarian restaurant in Orlando? Who knew? When my company sent me there several years ago I practically despaired of finding food... But I didn't know the area and was stuck in some convention hotel.

Have fun.

Re: Beautiful

Oh yes!!! Orlando is the 8th most "vegetarian friendly" city in the country! We've got a lot of good veggie restaurants =)

Re: Beautiful

Wow a vegy food place! I live in shitty west virgina and it's so hard to find that, they are willing to not put meat in my order, but who knows if meat touched it. Alot of people are uptight about vegetarians around here, they say animals are meant for food, bla bla. They think vegetarians are stuck up and have an ego like they are better then everyone else, but that not true at all. I cook for myself half the time so I know what touched it and all.......

I have some vegy recipes if any one is interested!! :)

Re: Beautiful

Bah, I hate folks like that! I mean, I obviously don't expect everybody suddenly turn vegetarian, but I don't think a little tolerance is too much to ask =P

Hi Jasmine,

Glad your move went smoothly, now it is the unpacking of everything that is a pain. I remember when we move here to arizona from NJ boxes everywhere. Love the painting on wood. Hope you received my check for my order of prints. Do you have your own painting room? Sharon.

Re: Hi Jasmine,

Hi Sharon!!!

I'll have to make a big post about the new house hopefully tomorrow. I just now got on my computer tonight after being out all day with my family!

I haven't gotten a chance to check my PO Box after the weekend, but I will of course email you as always when I receive it =)

Congrats on finally moving in!

I keep hearing about the Garden Cafe, I must go next time I'm there (hopefully soon). I'll be glad to get James, Kachina and Theodore back tommorrow!

I don't usually comment on your paintings (because I know you get tons of e-mails), but I loved "Blood Angel"!

Thank you Heather!!!

We had a GREAT time with Kachina, Theodore and James!!! Your brother was an ENORMOUS help to Matt moving the furniture - they both worked their arses off!!!

Kachina and I were just discussing the possibility of maybe you, her, and Theo coming to visit sometime! That would be a blast!!!

Thank you for the kind words, and for visiting my journal!

I've seen some photos of West Virginia that look gorgeous, but I've never actually been there =( Eventually I plan on visiting every state though, so we'll see.....
