DAMMIT! [Jan. 29th, 2004|07:08 pm]
Jasmine Becket-Griffith
Does this look familiar?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=554&item=3701048055

Here's mine of course:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3700620852&category=20158&sspagename=STRK%3AMESSE%3AIT&rd=1

LOL - looking through my emailbox I see eight different people emailed me warning about this auction ;) Thanks for looking out for me!

>>>EDIT<<< 01/30 Well - it looks like the painting in the auction has been replaced with an "original"(?) painting. For those of you who missed it - http://www.strangeling.com/copycat.jpg

LOL! That's almost identical! You linked the wrong one of yours but I know which one you meant to ;) I just love how she included this line...
The painting was also inspired by Jasmine Becket-Griffith. fanart.

I knew that name was familiar! It's princess_lilam She is very nice though. Maybe she just doesn't understand what she's done? :/

Holy SHIT!

Everyone knows who the better artist is!!! What an obvious rip off. How un-imaginative!

Re: Holy SHIT!

Un-imaginative, and incredibly freaking illegal. She DARED to say © Lindy Van Den Bosch on it too.

I don't think anything else could piss me off more right now....

That's one of the better ripoffs I've seen.

And in better, I mean it's really obvious who she was "inspired" by instead of me squinting, trying to see it amidst the mess *laughs*

Hm..I'd e-mail her.

Oh, that is so sad:( She is actually on my friend's list (not to mention some of the other LJ regulars), and I seriously wonder if she understands the idea of fanart. Seriously, think of the people that e-mail you and ask you why you put copyright on your pictures because they want to use it to print on T-shirts! Maybe she really is naive to it. I bet if you e-mail her, she'll feel pretty bad about it. Anyway, not trying to defend her, but she seems nice in general, and I wonder if it's not a big first-timer screw-up. I think a few of us have been there before!! *HUGS*

Re:

This girl emailed me before, asking me if it was okay for her to use my pictures to do "masterpiece copies" of. I told her it was okay, but only if she kept them for herself, for educational purposes, and did not publish them online or try to sell them. I clearly stated this, and tried to get the notion of copyright in there.

Which I guess she ignored, or didn't understand. I emailed her just now explaining that it is NOT okay to copy another person's work and try to SELL it. Calling it "fanart" or saying "inspired by Jasmine Becket-Griffith" does not make a whit of legal difference.

rip-off

You would think if someone was going to lift subject matter, they would at least have the imagination to change it enough visually in the painting so that they could not get pegged so easily - sheesh!
Your signature is your style anyway and she came nowhere near replicating it.
I guess it is a compliment in a way - although a very unwanted one...

Re:

Yep, I just emailed her.

She has contacted me before, telling me that she wanted to copy my drawings to "learn" from. I told her very clearly that it is okay to learn how to draw by looking at other peoples' drawings, but NOT TO EVER PUBLISH THEM ONLINE OR SELL THEM!

I guess she missed the point.

I mean, it's on eBay (where I sell) and is listed WHILE MINE IS STILL UP FOR AUCTION?!?!?!

This isn't "learning", this is copying for profit.

That's just awful, the art, the copyright infringement, the whole freakin thing. You've clearly stated your position to her, I hope you plan on talking to your attorney. :/

I contacted the seller first, and hopefully she'll remove the auction very soon. If not, then it's lawyer-time!

Someone anonymously posted a link to this thread in her journal so hopefully between this thread and the email you already sent her, she will take the auction down!

Re:

Lol, probably somebody who contacted me too.

I'm sure she won't do it again!

Gosh - I just looked at her UserPage and I'm on her friends' list, so she'll read all this too in case she doesn't get my email!

oh dear.................. that is really not cool. That girl is REALLY nice, she is on my friends list. She must not know what she is doing! Although after reading the thread, I'm beginning to think otherwise. Well, she needs to take the auction down. Otherwise you honestly could sue her.

Re:

I'm sure she just doesn't understand the significance of it. It says that she's from the Netherlands - she might not quite understand English well or something like that, so I'm giving her the chance to just remove the auction before I contact eBay or anything.

Wow. Leanne & I were on the phone with my each other when we first saw this and I've peeked in to see the hub-bub a few times since. All I can say is "Some PEOPLE!!! ARG!!!!!!" I sure hope she has the good sense to realize what she is doing and STOP it NOW. Guess I'll just spew the usual Imitation/flattery doggerol, but I'm still shaking my head - I mean she asked, you said NO and she proceeded. Yep - either this is a LARGE language gap or a large gap between brain cells... Good luck!!!! {{{{{{{{{{{{{hugs!!}}}}}}}}}}} :::hands you a NICE COLD bowl of ICE CREAM (or some such) for cooling-down with...:::

Re:

I don't want to report her, just in case she really doesn't understand (since English might not be her first language, etc.), so I contacted her directly and asked her to remove it. Hopefully she'll listen, and I won't have to pursue it further than that!

Hehe, erikasfriends made me the icon a little while ago when I was having a similar problem....

Sorry Jasmine!!(deleted comment) I just got too heated!
I did email her telling her that there is a differnet between being inspired and inspired/copy and selling it! I am sorry if you get mad for me emailing her, I just had to!

Re:

Lol - I was going to say - I never heard you cuss before, hehe!

You are a sweetheart =) I know so many fans of mine emailed me about the auction - I was painting all day and then when I checked my emailbox I had so many emails from people who saw it and were so mad, lol.

I emailed her myself - hopefully she will know better now. She could probably be good at drawing if she would stick to her own ideas!
