Well then... [Aug. 5th, 2003|09:01 pm]
Jasmine Becket-Griffith
I thought I'd get some painting in tonight....

But no. No way. I can't believe how many emails piled up while I was gone - even after deleting the spam and reading all my LJ replies, I still had almost 200! I got to most of them though (and it only took about six hours...)

Matt and I went out driving around Orlando running errands today. We found "Michael's" (art store)!!!! I'm so glad, I've been desperately needing to go there. It was a nice new posh store too, set up just like the one back in KC. I dropped a fortune on art supplies, and then spent a fortune at Office Max (conveniently close to the new Michael's!).

The rest of the day was spent preparing files and stuff for the publishers of another book I'm working on (in addition to The Art of Faery and Watercolour Faeries). I finally got all of that together - whew! That is a weight off of my mind. Now I've got a zillion prints to make =P So, in effect, I got a lot of work done today, just not a lot of painting =(

Here's to tomorrow though!

Almost 200 emails even after deleting spam and all your LJ replies?! Who on earth are they all from?!

Jeez, I know - I wonder how on earth this happens in just a few days....

Here's a rundown:

Lots of them are folks wanting to join my mailing list (which is easy, all I do is copy-paste their email address into my mailing list). Many of them are "Question for Seller" emails through eBay. About fifty of them are from various art mailing lists I myself belong to (some of which I read, some of which I just scan for my name, lol). A bunch of them are orders from my website (yay!), or from eBay customers who have recently won/paid/received their paintings/prints from eBay. Several are "Questions for Artist" from Elfwood and Epilogue. Some are commission requests or followups, some are "can you paint this for me?" tentative requests. There are a few dozen "I'm a new artist, and I would like advice on...." type emails (which I now have a standard form letter for, but I always "tweak" it for the individual person with specifics). There are a handful of usage/licensing requests - I'd like to use your artwork for my website/icon/graphics/newsletter/avatar/livejournal/desktop icons/message board/wallpaper/stationery/email signature/fanzine/etc.etc.etc.. A lot of people ask simple questions already answered in my FAQ, and sometimes I just send them a link there =)

Last, but not least, at least a quarter to a third of my email is made up of "fan-letters" =) These take the longest to go through, but they elicit the most satisfaction from me =) Some require just a simple thank you acknowledgement, while others ask zillions of questions, ask for advice (not only on art - you'd be surprised how many fans I don't even know will email me asking personal advice about their life in general), etc. Early on I promised myself I would write back to everybody (no matter how long it takes me), and it really is fun. The only bad thing is it cuts way into my painting time, but without fans I wouldn't be selling paintings at all, so I can't complain.

I also got one question asking very politely if he could have a nude photo of me ;)

Wow! You are a popular girl! All those e-mails for all kinds of different things! Do you license your images? The questions about personal advice for fans you don't even know sounds kind of weird! What do you say to them? I think it's great that write back to everybody! Your outlook is really great, "but without fans I wouldn't be selling paintings at all, so I can't complain." A lot of other people wouldn't even bother answering all those emails! Hee! A very polite nude photo request?! I guess you politely declined! ;)

I do license my images on occasion, tattoo parlours, some limited merchandising, etc.

When it's un-art-related sometimes it is a little strange, but I try to help whenever I can. I had a very sad email a little while ago. It was from the sister of one of my "regulars". I hadn't heard from her for awhile and I was wondering what she was up to. Her sister told me that she had committed suicide =( I felt so helpless, like I should have emailed her more =( There have been a couple of situations like that - I never know what to say =(

here's a completely unrelated question. do you know keri baugh? formerly keri bartok? i graduated from high school with her sister rory and they used to live in my neighbour. i just got my alumni newletter from our high school and keri's blurb says she is the communications manager for none other than celebration, florida! how bizare is that? so while you and i have never met, we've got a potential acquaintance in common :)

Oh wow! I don't think I know her, but that name sounds familiar!

I couldn't find her in the resident directory, do you know if she actually live in Celebration, or does she commute?

we should all be thankful if we ever reach "the jasmine stage" =) how did it happen anyway? You must have your name all over the place on the net to have that many people find out about you =) You go girl!

Re: Wow

Hehe, my name is everywhere - sometimes I like to search my name on various search engines, I pop up in the weirdest places sometimes!

Most people find me through my website, after that it is eBay, and then probably my galleries at Epilogue and Elfwood, and fairyartists.com and a lot of the collaborative sites. I get tons of "word of mouth" type references like "My friend has one of your prints" or "My boss has one of your paintings" or "My teacher showed us your website in class" (I get a LOT of that one, for some reason.....)

Re: Wow

Interesting =) Well thats cool about the teacher part, it shows you're a great example of a self-supporting artist! ;) Yah, I think I need to get my name out there more. But, I'm still searching for my true style...when the time is right, everything will fall into place I think.

OMG!! LOL That is too funny! I think you should send him this one ;)... http://www.jasminebecketgriffith.com/swampmaiden.html
The e-mail subject line should read "Jasmine in the Moonlight" Na maybe not you wouldn't want to encourage him. But it was a funny idea if i do say so myself :)

Hehe, maybe I'll do that - he was very polite, I'd like to offer him something. Maybe I'll link him to my "Green Fairy" - she's based off of my own figure, and she's nude, lol.
