EARTHQUAKE! And Syd Barrett, and art, and other stuff. [Sep. 11th, 2006|10:26 am]
Jasmine Becket-Griffith
Yesterday morning I was sitting at the computer working on my website, and I felt really weird for a second. Like I was going to faint or fall over or something. I asked Matt "Did you feel that? It felt like the Earth just shifted or something." He didn't feel anything, and thought I was just dizzy or nuts or something. I told him "I bet we find out later that there was an earthquake today!".

Lo and behold, a few hours later I saw the news online that those of us in Central Florida experienced an earthquake (a 6.0 in the Gulf of Mexico). What the heck? Hurricanes, sure, but an earthquake here in Florida? It's the END TIMES I tell you, END TIMES! EARTH CHANGES! ;P (just kidding).

It was weird though - I've never felt an earthquake. There is that big fault by Missouri where I grew up but I never felt an earthquake there.

It's just something that caught me off-guard, but it was a very minor (barely noticeable) incident.

Since we have come back from Dragon*Con we have been so busy trying to catch-up on everything. I've also been working on updating my website, which is always a big headache.

I'm also working on a new painting that is really, really, really cool - you can watch me while I paint here:

Hopefully I will finish it in time to post it tonight!

They are selling Syd Barrett's house.

I wish I could buy it. It would meaning selling my own house though, and I can't do that. I wish I'd win the lottery =P I hope whoever does buy it doesn't change it around or re-decorate very much.

Apparently they are selling all of his possessions too. In a way it seems kind of wrong, I don't know what to think about that. It is weird to think that after a person dies a bunch of people come sort through his stuff and auctions it to the highest bidder. They are selling everything - books he had, his bicycles, his paints, paintings, guitar, furniture, etc. It's weird to see his personal belongings on display like that.

However, you can bet I've already pre-ordered an advance catalogue from Cheffin's Auction House - the auctions start at the end of November. We'll see. I would love to have one of his bicycles (don't make me start singing "Bike" now!), or at least some of his paints or artwork.

Anyway - I need to get to work! Watch me paint some goblins!

Very very weird!

It's true - it just makes me paranoid that after I die everybody will sort through my stuff, lol.

I told James about the earthquake and he said maybe it was caused by people mining for oil in the gulf or something? I don't kmow. That is unexpected. Earthquakes are weird. I remember when I was little I was scared of earthquakes for some reason and planned on living in a helicopter when I grew up so I could be safe.

Yep - hurricanes I can expect, but earhquakes?

I'm hoping to get a lot of his things, it would mean a lot to me and I would treasure them. He has been an idol of mine since I was a child, and they would hold a great deal of importance for me.

Syd Barret's art is so very strange and beautiful, but I think it would disturb me to actually own any of it. It all looks like somebody's nightmares! But... but... his paint? So that you could create something with paint that he owned? Now, that's an idea I don't think I'd be able to resist! (I could understand if you bought it just to own and didn't want to use it, but that would almost seem like a waste.)

And I'm jealous that you felt the earthquake! I'm in Gainesville, not too far north of you, and we didn't feel it at all.

I'm definitely going to try to nab some artwork and supplies. I would treasure them! I would TOTALLY use a little of the paint to mix with my own and create something very special, probably something to keep for myself too.

I experienced an earthquake back in Canada that originated off lake Erie. Now that is an odd place to be having earthquakes.. Ontario Canada doesn’t see many natural disasters hehe. Anyway this one was smallish, toward London Ontario they said you would only feel it if you standing still. But I lived closer to the lake at a time out in the country. It sounded like a huge truck or combine was coming down the road making a loud rumble. Next I heard the house creaking and it seemed to shake back and fourth about three times. I was laying on the couch when it happened so I felt it pretty good!

I felt the Earthquake yesterday as well. I was at my computer, and my desk shook a little, as well as the walls. I thought it was my cats playing, or the guy next door working outside. I would have never thought it was an Earthquake! I didn't think much of it until later on in the night I turned on the news and they started talking about it. It made since after that. I know my cats are strong, but they aren't THAT strong! hehehe :o)Never in a million years did I think that would happen here in Florida!

Who ever thought of an earthquake would ever hit Florida. That is so weird. But stuff is getting weirder all the time.

Good luck on auction of Syd's stuff. OH PINK FLOYD. I was upset when I heard. That was the nly band I ever wanted to see live and never got to. I am depressed now..

Great new painting.
